The Mark Crouse - Layout Tool

Layout tools are very important to producing straight wraps. I had a problem with the layout tools that I was using because the rod handle was always laying on the bench and the blank would not stay flat in the tool.  With this improved Layout Tool design, I elevated the tool so there is sufficient clearance for the handle.

The Layout Tool also has an imbedded ruler for marking centers and crossings for your wraps. Existing layout tools work well for shorter rod blanks, such as Bass, Spinning, etc. However, for the larger “Big Boy” blanks, like Surf, Steelhead, etc., I found that the tools were too short, so I extended the overall length of the tool.

To begin using the tool, first mark your axis on the rod. Then lay the rod in the V-groove of the tool. At this point, lower the Aluminum Guide until it rests on the rod; line up your axis along the straight edge of the Aluminum Guide. Now you have a straight line along the blank to mark your centers and crossings.  Repeat this step for every axis you plan to do.

Keep in mind that if you mark one Axis you actually got two, if you mark 2 you will have 4. The count always doubles what you mark on the rod.

PICTORIAL DEMONSTRATION OF THE LAYOUT TOOL

The Layout Tool is one of the most important tools you can own if you enjoy decorative wrapping. This tool allows you to mark your centers and axis on the blank. This will help you keep your wrapping pattern aligned.

The rubber feet on the tool keep your handle elevated above the work bench, providing unobstructed turning.

The embedded ruler simplifies the process of marking your centers with equal spacing.
